I am greatly disappointed by Christians who do not think or live their lives like Christ. I mean, at least TRY! You cannot serve God and be destructive towards their will. You cannot serve God and be against basic human rights, providing for strangers, or creating conditions for all families to grow/thrive. They ask us two simple things as Christians; serve God (Joshua 22:5) and love each other (John 13:34). You cannot claim to do either while oppressing others.
I am curious what would happen if we conduct a mixed methods research study of Christians; an analysis of their belief in Christian principles and their perceptions about humans rights and Reproductive Justice (RJ). Would there be glaring inconsistencies in how people situate their own religion and their worldview/politic on equity? I'm at an optimistic null hypothesis.
I know there is some research out there about this already. One of my classmates/instructors, Rebecca Wolfe, is studying evangelistic churches and eating disorders, which aligns with the RJ principle of bodily autonomy. I've seen recent stories about how Black Christians perceive abortion (they get it AND they do it). There are programs like the one through Louisiana Public Health Institute that support Black churches and Christian leaders across the state doing sexual and reproductive health education for the congregations, though I don't know if it is still active. Dr. Toni Bond is centering her career of research around Womanism, reproductive justice and spirituality.
I know shifting a religious culture towards any direction requires a long term strategic effort, though. Back to my research question- Do Christian principles align or diverge from human rights and RJ? These answers can help me communicate to religious folks, especially misled Christians, with a cogent, nonemotional affect. Reproductive Justice conspiring between all religions and cultures is a step towards the freedom I see in our future.
I call God They/Them because who has seen God's penis?...I'll wait.
