Floating Lanterns: Then and Now

Floating lanterns, also known as sky lanterns, are beautiful yet their architecture is so simple. With a plain wooden frame, a paper body and a fire source, these objects help escalate the festivities of any occasion.

The use of these infamous symbols is rich in diversity. Their first documented use case was in China where they were used for military signaling between troops. In ancient China, they were also used to provide light and evolved into symbols of Buddhist worship. Furthermore, in Thailand, offering a sky lantern to a monk was thought to bring good luck as the lantern would light the path to wisdom and understanding. Another belief was that these lanterns floated upwards, close to the Gods in heaven, and delivered the prayers and desires of the writers. Sky lanterns were also used as symbols of gratitude to God for his many blessings.

You’ve probably seen them being used at a wedding you’ve attended. That’s because these lanterns are still believed to bring good fortune today. They are used mainly for decoration and modern forms of celebration.

It was believed that the lanterns floated up to the heavens, closer to the Gods residing there and made the wishes and prayers of the senders come true. Sky lanterns were also used for thanking God for his blessings and for the prosperity, happiness, and luck that people enjoyed.
