Recipe for Meeting your Intellectual Idols

I am blessed to have been mentored by a person who put me in all the right places. I had access to leaders in the movement, in rooms that young professionals could only dream. There were too many times where I has an in depth conversation with an academic legend and I was either abysmally unprepared or just ignorant to their superstar. In one regard, it made me very relatable. On the other hand, some of them had to be thinking "What is up with this girl?" Below is the sauce, the recipe to not look dumb out here in big rooms. Every idol can become a mentor. Also, don't think too hard. Remember, YOU are special and relevant too. You will see them again.




Ingredients:

  • 2 Handfuls gratitude and appreciation

  • 5oz Confidence and passion for your own work

  • 1/2 cup Knowledge of their work and research interests

  • 1 Phone, Notebook or pen

For extra flavor

  • Relevant materials

  • Professional attire

  • Engaging conversation skills

Instructions:

  1. Do your research: Learn everything you can about your academic idols and potential mentors. This will help you impress them with your knowledge and show that you're serious about your work.

  2. Dress to impress: Show up looking sharp and professional. Make sure you're dressed for success and ready to make a great first impression.

  3. Come prepared: Bring a notebook, pen, and any relevant materials, like your CV or research proposals. This will show them that you're organized and on top of your game.

  4. Be confident: Speak clearly, confidently, and with passion about your work. Show them that you're knowledgeable and serious about your field.

  5. Keep it short and sweet: Don't ramble or go off-topic. Make your points clearly and succinctly.

  6. Engage in conversation: Ask thoughtful questions, share your own experiences, and contribute to the conversation. Show them that you're engaged and interested in what they have to say.

  7. Show appreciation: After the conversation or meeting, send a thank-you note or email. Let them know how much you appreciated their time and insights.
